Why did the speaker keep choosing the government side even though the opposition was clearly louder? I am interested as a brit because here they’d call for a division straight away, although divisions can also be deferred here it is rare.

It isn’t the Westminster tradition… it might be in Australia but here in Britain we’ve always not really cared about party label when nominating the speaker, we’ve had Labour speakers during Conservative governments and Conservative speakers during Conservative-Liberal Democrat governments etc. (Labour governs less so I can’t think of an example of a Conservative speaker during a Labour government)
